Portrait of Peter, signed l.r. “Leverett 1953”, oil on canvas, 22 x 24
This painting was brought to Janice by the daughter of an elderly woman who has owned this painting since its creation. Five years ago the family brought it to a friend who dabbled in art restoration to repair a few tears in the canvas. Somehow they lost track of the painting and finally retrieved it, and the above "before" painting is what they found! It is not known exactly what went wrong; perhaps the restorer in frustration or anger painted swaths of color over the face and hand? The customer was desperate to have it fixed because her mother loved the painting had recently asked as to its whereabouts.
After several tests Janice found a way to remove the paint and the hardened white gesso/primer underneath. She then inpainted what remained thus bringing the portrait back to life. Much to the delight of the customer and her family this painting was saved, and as you can see it is a hugely successful restoration!
