“Portrait of Maria Rosa Sardiña Davalos”, by Felix de Cossio,
32 x 40, oil on canvas, 1945.

This painting was smuggled out of Havana, Cuba in a tube that cracked and bent the original canvas. It had been previously restored in 1960 with many areas of discolored inpainting, and the painting was in a fragile condition with extensive flaking and missing paint. In addition, drips of a sticky substance covered most of the painting. After cleaning, the flaking was secured and then extensive touch up/inpainting was applied.

The woman in this painting was the granddaughter of Mario Garcia Menocal, the President of Cuba for two terms from 1914-1921.

The artist, a well known Cuban painter, also painted First Lady Betty Ford's official White House portrait.
